About Me

Dr. Karis Foster, is passionate about the future of the apparel and textile industry. As a North Carolina native, she cares deeply about the development of sustainable fashion and reshoring initiatives to resurrect the local textile industry.

She began her fashion career at NC State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Fashion and Textile Management with a concentration in Fashion Development and Product Management. Dr. Foster later earned her Masters of Textile, and Doctor of Philosophy in Textile Technology Management from NC State University.

She has worked with fashion brands and textile start-ups based in North Carolina and New York with design and product development roles. During her graduate studies, she explored the discipline of knitting and the newest 3D knitting technologies currently available. Her knitwear and textile designs have been exhibited at international conferences.

Her areas of expertise are: sustainability, knitting, textiles and materials, fashion design and patternmaking, CAD for fashion, CAD patternmaking, technical design and new product development. Karis is a tenure-track faculty in Apparel Design & Merchandising at Appalachian and provides instruction in hand-rendered illustration, CAD illustration, styling for apparel, fashion merchandising, flat-patternmaking and draping.
